04//09//02 - Medewi

Yesterday we made our way to the northwest of Bali to check out some more surf spots on that coastline.

So we rented a car and started off from Kuta. Our car was a Suzuki Katana also known as Vitara aka "Jimny".

Leaving Kuta we could already see some bigger waves arriving at Kuta Beach and Kuta Reef which the swell forecast on the internet promised.

On Bali people drive on the left side so it's not as easy as at home. In addition to that there are plenty of motorbikers on the road who do not seem to follow any rules. Outside of the towns there are busses which are racing the roads as if they were the only ones there.

A good advice is being two people in the car so one can drive and the other one watch the traffic and assist the driver like in a ralley car race.

After the Kuta-Legian traffic chaos the road leads away from the coast into the mountains and the landscape is mostly made up of rice fields.

At Balian (another surf spot) the road meets the coast again and goes along the shore all the way up to Medewi. So we could already see that the swell had arrived here observing waves like on monster days in France: Big, blown out and very high frequency.

Arriving at Medewi we were surprised by the good conditions here: Some guys were having an easy evening session and seemed to have a lot of fun.

As it started to get dark we looked for a place to stay overnight and found a room in the Tinjaya Bungalows which again are simply and cheap. Going to bed we were already happy to have our morning session the day after.

The next day we got up and checked the surf and saw that the swell finally had arrived at Medewi. It was really big with only a few people out in the water fighting against the currents and paddling more than surfing.

This was the reason for our lazy day staying on the beach and relaxing.
